Constantly Battling Data Quality Issues? You Might be playing the wrong game.

In many organizations, the data team is often seen as the sole guardian of data quality. But is this a fair expectation? Imagine a soccer game where the referee is expected to score goals. Unreasonable, right? Yet, we often place similar expectations on our data teams.

The Real Champions of Data Quality

The truth is, ensuring top-notch data quality is a collective responsibility. It’s the business players who are in the field, interacting with data daily. They set the standards, establish the procedures, and essentially ‘play the game’. The data team, on the other hand, is there to facilitate this process – to be the referee, not a contestant.

Facilitating the Fight, Not Fighting the Battle

The data team’s role is crucial, yet distinct. They provide the framework, the rules of the game, and the tools necessary for the players to excel. They ensure fair play and that the standards set by the business are upheld. But they aren’t the ones scoring the ‘data goals’.

Rethinking Our Approach

It’s time we shift our perspective and recognize that data quality is a team sport. The business players are the key athletes, while the data team ensures a fair and efficient game; and may even take the role of coach where needed.

I invite you to share your thoughts and experiences. How does your organization approach data quality? Who are your key players?

In Data Quality, It’s Not Just About Who Plays the Game, But How the Game is Played.
